When is it okay to ask for a raise (and how to do it tactfully)

When is it okay to ask for a raise (and how to do it tactfully)When is it okay to ask for a raise (and how to do it tactfully)Sure, they say money cant buy you happiness but lets be real here. We would all love if our anfhreres paid us more than we make now. This is true whether you consider yourself just a halfway decent employee, or even more so if you feel like (or know for sure) you work your butt off on a regular basis without being compensated enough. No matter what your situation, a hefty raise is what dreams are made ofHowever, reality is cold in comparison to that dream.Instead of getting raises at a somewhat predictable frequency, whats much more typical is hard working employees just keep their heads down, do their work and wonder if theyll ever get a pay bump. And to be fair, its not a surprise why as much as any company might value its employees, their primary interest will likely always be to stay in business and to maximize profits giving out raises all the time doesn t directly help them do that, so they dont (unless they really want to retain you). Therefore, most of the time, a hard-working employees main chance for ever getting a raise is to bring up the subject themselves. The question is thenwhen is it an okay time to ask for a raise?Done cleverly, you might land the raise youve wanted all along. But what could also happen is you could fall on your face and not get a single penny added to your salary if you do it at the wrong time or for the wrong reason. Below are 7 scenarios that shed light on if its a smart time to ask for a raise and how to broach the subject, if it is.6 situations that are great opportunities to ask for a raise1. You just crushed your goal(s)If you just brought on a big new client, effectively implemented an important piece of technology, or designed a process that has saved the company tons of time and money, get your hand out Cashing in when youre fresh off a commendable accomplishment is an ideal way to get your salar y bumped. How to do it Meet with your boss, outline your specific contributions, and how they resulted in exceeding the goal. Include concrete numbers whenever possible.2. Your pay is lower than the pay range for your roleSome companies set up pay ranges for certain jobs. Perhaps you didnt have much experience when you started, or some other reason caused you to accept a lower salary and your pay doesnt match up with your pay grade today. If youve been doing your job well for a solid amount of time, but your salary is below or at the bottom of the pay grade for the work that youve been doing, its time to consider asking for a raise. How to do it Point out your salary and pay grade to your manager and request to be moved into the pay range thats appropriate for the role and responsibilities that youve taken on.3. Youve recently accepted more responsibilityIf youve taken over projects from someone else or stepped into a higher role, you deserve to be compensated for your increase in pro ductivity. How to do it Show your manager how much more you have on your plate and how youre managing it. Ask for additional compensation for your efforts.4. Your company is stableIf a company just lost a big account, is a new startup that is still trying to become profitable, or is going through a merger, this might not be the right time to ask for a pay increase because even if your boss really wanted to hear you out. If, however, your organization is stable and profitable, the time may be right to get .How to do it Explain you have waited to ask until the company is stable, and you would like your hard work and dedication to be rewarded.5. You havent had a raise in over a yearPeriodic increases are the best way to increase your salary in the long-term. Dont let years trickle by without a raise. How to do it Point out to your manager the date of your last raise. Discuss your performance and ask for a bump in pay.6. Youve been offered another opportunityUsing this one means walking a very fine line, because once you tell your current employer that youve received another opportunity and are considering it, they might simply be done with you send you on your way without further conversation about pay. This is exactly why you should NEVER say you have a job offer if you dont actually have one, by the way. However, if youve gauged the situation well and your current company really does want to keep you, a legitimate outside job opportunity could be exactly the right push needed to get you a nice little pay bump. How to do it Meet with your manager and tell him/her about your new job offer. Express your genuine interest in staying at your company, so long as certain things happen including a raise.Knowing when and in what situation to ask for a raise is essential in stacking the odds in your favor. If one of these scenarios sounds like the situation youre in, plan your strategy and dont delay in getting in front of your boss to make your case for a raise. This article was originally published on Kununu.

Specialty dining on cruises elevates your culinary experiences

Specialty dining on cruises elevates your culinary experiences Specialty dining on cruises elevates your culinary experiences Cruising is a vacation option packed with value. Included in your cruise fare are meals in the main dining room and many casual venues on board, as well as your cabin, and most entertainment and onboard activities. Specialty dining restaurants charge either per diem per passenger or guests can pay a la carte. We’ve asked travel experts about why to splurge on these dining extras.Specialty dining helps make cruise vacations relaxing and exclusiveAt specialty dining venues, there is a broader selection of dining times, allowing guests you more activity choices, says Charlotte Nichols, director of business development, supplier relations and partnership marketing for AAA Travel at AAA Northeast. Generally, when eating dinner in the main dining room, guests have a set dining time. A specialty dining reservation can change an evening routine a bit.Special requests may be easierSpecialty dining allows more customization available for your overall experience. If there are food restrictions , they may be easily handled there. Also, if sailing during a celebration, it can be nicer in a more intimate setting like birthdays and anniversaries.Ambiance mattersThe main dining rooms are nice and the servers are very attentive but the noise level can be a challenge. “Specialty dining venues are smaller and more intimate spaces for romance or are easier to have conversations with like-minded people,” Nichols says.Mix it upNichols said to try an avoid the boredom of the same venue night after night. “Switch it up,” she recommends. On Royal Caribbean’s newest ship Symphony of the Seas, which is also the largest ship in the world, guests can elevate their main dining room experience at dining venues including Chops Grille, Hooked Seafood, 150 Central Park, Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver, Wonderland and Izumi. The level of service and dining experience is well worth the cost at any of these restaurants.Try and book your cruise with dining perksThe cruise lines use have been using specialty dining promotions and perks as part of their booking incentives instead of reducing cruise prices, says travel blogger at WeAtTheSea.com, Michelle Miller.“Specifically, they are being offered in a choose your perk format, Celebrity, MSC, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian have all have done this fall,” she says.According to Miller, cruisers are given options of things like 1) specialty dining, 2) beverage packages, 3) internet use, 4) onboard credit, 5) shore excursions. “Depending on the level of cabin selected, the cruisers can choose one or even all of the perks offered,” Miller continues. The ports of calls may even be featuredTravel professionals like Rachael Young with Journey Genies Travel Planning, recommend specialty dining to their clients for a more enhanced experience over a buffet or the main dining room. Sometimes, these dining venues feature menu items tied to the ports the ship is calling on.“Along with fine dining selections, a specialty res taurant may be themed to a particular destination or region,” explained Young. “This often means you can venture outside of your culinary comfort zone, trying new and delicious foods that have more cultural flair.”

How to Become More Intriguing and Influential at Work

How to Become More Intriguing and Influential at Work How to Become More Intriguing and Influential at Work Once they speak, people realize that it’s not the nice tie they are wearing, nor is it the expensive suit, but rather the quality of their character and raw passion for their profession, which makes them compelling and intriguing. Becoming an “influential” in corporate America means having that something. Among other things, it means being capable of formulating creative solutions to complex problems…it means being able to command respect while simultaneously displaying a warm character. Now that we have some of the traits of an individual who others would deem interesting in corporate America, let’s further look into the variables that make people win over co-workers, subordinates and bosses. You Must Understand Before You Can Sway Judgment If you want to be able to change people’s opinion of you, you must first understand how human beings will form opinions of others around the office. Among the first things people learn about you are most likely conclusions drawn from your appearance. People make rapid-fire decisions based upon factors, such as your dress, your race, your body posture, hair color, height, weight, age, gender, etc.  Before you open your mouth, you are stereotyped. As a general rule, nice and appropriate dress will make you appear more competent to an interviewer, client, fellow employee, etc.  Moreover, those who are in shape will be conceived as stronger and more resilient than individuals who take less care of their bodies. While it’s not necessary to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on how we look, it is still crucial to make our appearance conducive to others believing that we can efficiently do a job.  While we can’t control our current clothing budget, a simple smile can make a very positive difference in our interactions with others.  A smile can shape one’s character more than an Armani suit. “Compelling Workers In their book, “Compelling People,” authors John Neffinger and Matthew Kohut discuss how men and women are perceived by others. They argue that as a culture, we will expect men to be strong and authoritative (sometimes even a bit “cold”).  At the office (and in life), men are often rewarded for such behavior. At work, men who display candor will be more likely to be thought of having leadership acumen than passive males. While bull-dozing and forcing their opinion on others can have devastating consequences, this behavior is accepted to an extent. On the flip side, for years women who have done the same were punished for their behavior. For years, women who displayed candor would be viewed as less “warm.” This widely held view made required female workers to be near perfect in their performance. Only in recent years has the workforce embraced women with strength, ambition and insight.  Despite it going against best leadership practices, some male employers want to hire females who are more likable via an easy-going attitude. Getting Co-Workers to Like You More Around the office, much of your ability to influence rests on whether or not people like you.  Regardless of sex, there are certain implementations everyone can incorporate into behavior, which will result in more positive interactions. 1. Among other things, these include: 2. Being a strong listener. 3. Becoming genuinely interested in others. 4. Talking in terms of other people’s interests. 5. Making people feel important regardless of title. 6. Taking responsibility for mistakes. In the End It’s never too late to change into a compelling person around the office.  Regardless of age, sex or appearance, we all strive to  be regarded in a positive manner by others. To do so takes a comprehensive understanding of ourselves and those around us as well as some basic alterations in our professional approach and demeanor.

Whats the worst career advice youve been given

What's the worst career advice you've been given What's the worst career advice you've been given What’s the worst career advice you’ve been given? From  Marc CenedellaI sat down recently with Adam Bryant of The New York Times, who writes the “Corner Office” feature, to discuss management and hiring. I thought I’d share a bit of the article below, and you can see the entire interview at nytimes.com/2010/12/12/business/12corner.html  (registration required). Q.  What was your approach when you started Ladders seven years ago?A.  It became a matter of figuring out how to build a team and share with them what inspired me to start the company. There’s a quote from the French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that really spoke to me. It says, “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”So the management style that I have is first, share your passion. Explain to people why it’s an exciting idea and how they can be involved in it. In an entrepreneurial business, the most important thing, the thing that creates the most excitement and value and interest in the business, is the big picture - where are we going. You can destroy little bits of it by all these little errors that you make. But if you fix all of them and you don’t have the big picture, then you’re never going to get there. Really engaging people in that bi g picture is way more important, I think, to success. So I’ve learned to do the big-picture stuff, and I can be really great at the analytics - sitting down and running the numbers. What I’ve had to learn over time is the middle part about, O.K., how do you build a team? How do you assign a team to do something? How do you give them enough rope to be successful, and when do you take it back? The middle part has been trial and error for me.Q.  Talk more about that.A.  At 30 employees, you can kind of still be an entrepreneur and see everybody and bark out orders. Beyond that you really can’t, so you have to decide, “Hey, is this what I want to do?” There are many serial entrepreneurs and they go on to the next thing and that’s great. For me, this is something I want to be involved with for my life. And if I’m going to be the manager, I ought to learn more about managing.Q.  How did you learn to do it?A.  Getting a coach is the best thing that you can do. I’ve done fou r years with two different coaches, and it is just fantastic. There’s what you say and there’s what people hear, and the gap between those two is sometimes enormous. What really matters is what people hear, not what you say.Being a manager also isn’t about trying to become perfect. You’re not going to stop making errors. But it’s about having a mature appreciation for the fact that you’re a flawed human being. Probably everyone around you is a flawed human being. What are your flaws and how are you going to manage around them? What are your strengths? How are you going to optimize those?I also learned a good trick, which is to ask somebody, “How are you doing?” They’ll usually say, “Good.” And I’ll say, “No, no, really. How are you doing?” And they’ll answer, “Good.” But then I’ll say, “Tell me what would you say if you weren’t doing good? How would you express that to me?” And then they tell you things. It’s partly little tactics, but the more important part is making it clear that you want to hear what they have to say.Q.  How do you hire?A.  We use the “topgrading” system by Geoff Smart. It says that the “How are you doing?” interview has about a 50 percent chance of success. That kind of interview is just a social call, right? You’re not actually seeking to find out anything about somebody’s performance. All you’re talking about is vague generalities. In this method, the structure is more, “What have you done in the past relative to what this job needs?” So if I’m hiring a direct report, we’ll have four people plus one person from H.R. in the interview committee. We’ll sit down first and say, there are 51 different areas that could be important that we’re looking for in somebody - a good coach, analyst, public speaker, all these different areas that could be important. We have to pick six, and it’s really interesting to have these discussions with your colleagues. In some cases it turn s out that everybody’s got a different six, and that’s a problem.Once you decide on the six characteristics that are most important for the particular job you’re trying to fill, then there’s a series of questions for each one, always focused on past performance. It’s no guarantee of future performance, but it’s the best predictor.Q.  What’s an effective question that you use in most interviews?A.  What’s the best and worst career advice you’ve been given in your career? That gets to the underlying point about what people think is important. The best career advice part gets to what they think is important; worst career advice kind of tells you whether the person is trying to snow you. I want to know if you’re trying to snow me under the stress of the interview and trying to tell me things that you know aren’t true - that you don’t make bad decisions, that you haven’t gotten any bad career advice, that type of stuff. The point is that the interview is uncomfo rtable, but so are budget review meetings and so are a lot of meetings in day-to-day life. We’re not a bunch of perfect people who work together. We’re all people with flaws. I want to know if you’re somebody who feels comfortable enough to talk about dumb things that you’ve done or dumb advice that you’ve taken. Phrasing it in the form of, “Hey, what’s the worst advice you got?” at least gives you a half-step of distance from it. It tells you something about the character of the person.Q.  What’s the best question people should ask in an interview?A.  When they ask you, “Hey, do you have any more questions?” ask them, “How do I help you get a gold star in your review next year?” The person who’s interviewing you had to go through a lot of effort to get this opening, particularly in this economy. Be empathetic and realize that they are hoping that this position is going to make their life better. Ask them how you can be a part of that.OK, Readers, I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I enjoyed having the conversation with Adam Bryant - he’s been doing these “Corner Office” interviews for years, and has a book coming out this spring with lessons learned from all the big honchos he’s spoken with - I’ll make sure to send along the link when it’s published.Oh! And one last thing. If you’re looking for a great holiday gift for one of the professionals in your life who needs to change jobs next year, may I be so bold as to suggest my book   “You’re Better Than Your Job Search” ? My co-author Matthew Rothenberg and I have stuffed it like a stocking hung by the chimney with care: There’s interview advice, resume tips, and job search guidance that make it a great treat for someone who is transitioning in the New Year! You can pick up your copy   here  and have it in somebody’s hot little hands this week…Good luck with your search this week!Warmest regards, Marc Cenedella, Founder CEO, Ladders.com Follow me on Twitter   here.  Author’s note:I’ve been writing these newsletters weekly for almost a decade in order to provide you with the advice, encouragement, and assistance you need in your professional job hunt. I’ll take what we’ve learned at Ladders during the week, or experiences I’ve had with job-seekers all over the country, and try to find a usable lesson, a valuable insight, or a helpful tip to share with you on Monday morning (my writing deadline is 3 p.m. every Sunday afternoon).I do read your replies to this newsletter. Because of the volume of replies - typically over 1,000 per week - I’m unable to answer you personally, but one of our very qualified staff from our Job Search Support team will get back to you - most of the time within three hours or less.As I am interested in every reply I get, I’ll also occasionally reach out directly by phone or by email to say thanks, or ask a question, or to see how we can solve your problem better. Tips for Nailing Your Skype Internship Interview

Tips for Nailing Your Skype Internship Interview Tips for Nailing Your Skype Internship Interview Every day, students around the world are being asked to participate in Skype interviews for their summer internships. Typically, this happens because they go to school in a city or country that’s a long distance away from where the potential internship opportunity is located.  Skype provides a quick virtual solution for employer’s that need face time with students unable to travel the distance.   For a Skype interview, you only need to download the Skype program on your computer. You can also download the Skype app on your phone, but it’s not quite as reliable. Today, you typically don’t need an external microphone or webcam because, for the most part, most computer manufacturers now build them into their system. If your computer is older, you might need to get a webcam and/or microphone, which you can pick up at any Best Buy or purchase online.   Remember,  Skype  is a different interview platform that requires a different set of interview tips. Top Tips for a Successful Skype Interview Practice makes perfect. Go into your career center and ask if they’ll do a mock interview with you. The way you appear on Skype can feel slightly different than the way you do in person. Do a few practice interviews and ask for feedback on your interview skills. Create your set. You want to make sure you angle your computer correctly and sit with an uncluttered background behind you. That means no background shots of your dorm bed. Also, try to avoid backgrounds with large art (especially heavy metal band posters) on the walls. Remember, you are a professional- your background should look professional as well. Look at the camera. When most people are doing Skype interviews, they tend to look at themselves. You want to make eye contact with the employer and the way to do that is actually to avoid looking directly at yourself and to look right into the camera. Think of this as your way to make direct eye contact. Dress for success. Yes, this is a virtual interview but they can still see you. Make sure you are dressed up  the way you would if you were going to the office. A button down shirt and a blazer is always a great choice for a Skype interview- for guys and girls. A word to the wise.  Dont just dress up from the waist up just because the interviewer cant see below your waist. Dressing up also has to do with how you feel and sweatpants will make you feel half ready for the interview. Check the employer Skype name. In order to do a Skype interview, you will need to connect with the employer on Skype a few minutes before the interview. You’ll need their Skype username in order to connect. Make sure you find the employer on Skype the day before the interview. You want to allow time just in case you have an issue finding their username. Confirm the volume. Before you start the interview, confirm that the employer can hear you and see you properly. You want to make sure everything is working properly before you get started. Pump up the energy. You have a virtual wall between you and the employer so you want to make sure you show off your personality. Be upbeat and energetic during the interview. This is a great topic point to raise with your career center about during your mock interview. Take it seriously. Although it may not feel as intense because you are not at a brick and mortar office, take the Skype interview seriously. This is the way the company will be selecting their interns. If you don’t take it seriously, it will show in the interview. Articulate your words clearly. Again, you have a virtual wall between you and the employer. Make sure you don’t speak too fast and don’t rush your words. Take the time to clearly articulate everything you are saying. Show your passion. Just as you would in an in-person interview, make sure ?the potential employer leaves the interview knowing how passionate you are about the company and the position. If you aren’t able to express that while answering questions, make a point to mention it at the end of the interview. Say something like, “I just want you to know how passionate I am about this company and this specific internship position. I really would love to work for you.”

Here are 5 ways to save money in your 20s so you can succeed

Here are 5 ways to save money in your 20s so you can succeed Here are 5 ways to save money in your 20s so you can succeed Do you have a resolution to get your finances together in 2019? A lot of people in their 20s are dealing with large amounts of student loan and credit card debt and living paycheck to paycheck, dreaming of days when they can begin to use their money to reach their financial goals. While it’s easy to that think financial planning at this stage in your life is pointless, the truth is there are some basic strategies you can implement, regardless of how much debt you have or how much income you’re earning. Learning these strategies will help set up the financial foundation you need to move through this challenging time in your life and set the stage for a strong financial future.1. Create a budgetEven as a young adult who may not be making that much money yet, budgeting is critical, as it allows you to see how much money is coming in and going out every month. Although most 20-year-olds understand they should budget, the reality is most just don’t do it. Get a budgeting system as e arly in place as possible and review how you are spending your money so you can make adjustments, if necessary, to ensure you are living within your means and able to save for your financial goals. The basic budget formula for after-tax income is:50% for fixed expenses, such as housing (28% or less for housing expenses), basic food, insurance premiums, etc.20% for financial goals. This would include extra debt payments, your cash cushion, retirement, etc.30% for variable expenses, such as dining out, entertainment, travel, etc.2. Build up a cash cushionThe goal of a cash cushion is to have three to nine months of your fixed expenses in a savings account to pay for life’s unexpected incidents. Life always throws curveballs- your car breaks down, your computer crashes or you receive an unexpected medical bill- and having money in the bank to cover those expenses will help you maintain your financial peace of mind. If your fixed expenses are $3,000 per month, you should aim to build a cash cushion of anywhere between $9,000-$18,000, depending on your comfort level, job security, etc. That sounds like a lot, I know. But remember, just start with what you can to build you cash cushion over a few years. Again, even if it’s $10 a week, that’s still one step in the right direction.3. Keep an eye on your credit score Our credit score affects nearly everything in our financial lives. It affects the interest rate on the car loan we apply for, the mortgage loan, the credit cards- even employers and landlords can reference your credit score when reviewing your application. By monitoring your credit score, you can see where you stand and what you can do to improve it if necessary. Use websites like creditkarma.com to view your credit score (not your actual FICO) regularly for free and then pay to see your actual credit score at least annually using annualcreditreport.com.4. Create a debt reduction planThe first step is to make a list of all your debts. Get clear about how much you owe, the interest rate of each debt, and the minimum payment due. Then review your budget to determine how much you can realistically add toward extra debt payments and start with the debt with the highest interest rate while paying the minimums on the rest. The Rise of ASME in Washington

The Rise of ASME in Washington The Rise of ASME in Washington The Rise of ASME in Washington Image: Donald Marlowe, Jr. A succession of ASME presidents in the post-World War II period believed the Society should become a forceful voice for engineering, both to advocate for the profession and to offer technical expertise to national decision-makersand that it needed a presence in Washington, D.C. to do so. Perhaps the pivotal figure in realizing this vision was Donald E. Marlowe, who, during his tenure as Dean of the School of Engineering and Architecture at Washington D.C.s Catholic University of America, served as ASMEs 88th president in 1969-1970. During and after the Second World War, Marlowe served in the U.S. Navy as Associate Director of the Naval Ordinance Laboratory, where, as he relates in his oral history interview, he had a marvelous time working out the mechanics of underwater weaponry and subjecting submarine armor to increasingly violent depth charge blasts. In the end, Marlowe spent more than two decades living and working at the nations center of legislation and governance; it convinced him that Washington was vital to the future of the profession. [My] experiences left me with two very strong feelings about technical society activities in Washington, he says. One, I was a very strong supporter of a unified engineering society The other, I was convinced that engineering as a profession and the societies in particular were very poorly represented in the legislature Those two obsessions really determined the major thrust that I tried to put on the road as I became President of ASME. ASME President (1969-70) Donald Marlowe (left) pictured with Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter. Image: Donald Marlowe, Jr. In April of 1970, Marlowe chaired a goals conference for ASME that came to be known as Arden House, after the conference center where it took place in Harriman, NY. Arden House was a watershed for ASME, the moment when the Society shifted from a more technical orientation to thebroader roleit plays today. The assembled members, led by President Marlowe, promulgated thirteen goals for ASME, stars by which ASMEs future course might be set (Mechanical EngineeringApril 1970 p18). The Overriding Goal they formulated, the one that subsumed all the others, was that ASME should move vigorously from what is now essentially a technical society to a truly professional society sensitive to the engineers responsibility to the public, and dedicated to a leadership role in making technology a true servant of man. Marlowe believed strongly that a Washington office would be necessary to support the new goals, manifestly including #11: To provide government at all levels with technical advice in the public interest and to develop a climate of understanding and credibility that will foster a continuing dialogue. Dr. Reginald Vachon, now an ASME past president himself as well as a member of more than 55 years standing, was a delegate at Arden House as well as a member of the committee which shortly thereafter approved the foundation of the DC Office. I worked with Don Marlowe for years, back when I was one of the young voices in the society, Vachon says. Yes, Don was instrumental in establishing the Washington Center. It was controversial. Members were concerned ASME would be accused of lobbying if we established a Washington office. But I am also a lawyer. We brought the law right into the committee meeting and showed the members it wasnt going to be a problem. The committee was persuaded, and in 1972 ASMEs Washington Center was open for business. Forty-one years later, todays Washington Center is an important nexus of Society activity. Opened with a staff of two, its now home to 18 staffers who work in a range of fields important to todays ASME: government relations, public affairs and outreach, strategic issues, diversity and inclusion strategy, innovation, and research technology development among them. ASMEs Washington Center also serves as the offices of the ASME Foundation, the Federal Fellows program, the Industry Advisory Board, and as the center of program development for ASMEs department ofStandards and Certification. Thus from President Don Marlowes obsession more than forty years ago did a thriving center of ASMEs work come into being. We think that if he were still with us today, President Marlowe would be pleased to see what ASME has made of his vision.
